When it comes to misogyny and male chauvinism, there has been plenty of movies that exhibit patriarchy and masculinity in a glorifying way. The basic plot of every Bollywood movie is centered around a male character, who dictates his life and people around him. The recent release of Animal has been an area of controversy because of how women have been objectified and mistreated, which has also created a different outlook of women, with blatant sexist remarks. What is more baffling, is that this movie has set a benchmark for being the most misogynistic film. Filmmaking is a deterring process, with extreme research, skills and efforts; and most commercial movies are made with the mentality of their consumer.
Along with Animal, Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s previous film Kabir Singh showcased the same themes, putting women in a box, expecting them to behave in a certain way. Adultery, masochism, aggressive attitude, marital rape like issues has been glorified; the real issue is not just glorification, the real issue is these things are taken into consideration, because cinema is a bleak tool and has the power to change perspective, this creates a rudimentary dichotomy in society. Then again, the decision relys on the audience if they decide to watch the movie for entertainment sake or logical purpose.
The old Bollywood movies had always been patriarchy rooted, however there has been significant progress in the type of movies Bollywood had been making for years, we had women centric movies performing immensely well at box office. The deep core of almost every Bollywood movie has always been inclined towards toxic masculinity.
